My Journey to FGA Status

The text arrived on a Thursday, and in an instant, the atmosphere shifted. A classmate had received their results—the very letter we had spent months both craving and dreading. They had passed their Gem-A diploma, and while I was genuinely elated for them, a sharp realisation followed: my own fate was currently sitting in a Royal Mail van, or perhaps already waiting behind my front door. That single envelope held the verdict on a year of relentless study and sacrifice. It was the ultimate "pass or fail" on an investment that I knew would fundamentally redefine my standing in the jewellery industry.

In that moment, my whole body turned cold and hot at the same time. I hurriedly made my excuses to the traders at the antiques market I was attending and began the drive home. Every mile felt like ten; every red light felt like an eternity.

I parked, sprinted to the letterbox, and found... nothing. The post had not turned up yet.

The Weight of the Investment

Sitting with a cup of coffee, my mind drifted back to the moment I pressed the "send" button on my tuition fees. It was a significant investment, fuelled by a nagging frustration. In the antiques trade, there is often a clouded mystery surrounding coloured stones. I was tired of the guessing games: Is this a sapphire or a spinel? Is it "paste" or a sophisticated synthetic? Has this stone been swapped out of its original setting?

I realised that while many dealers boast years of experience, far too many are simply operating on guesswork. They rely on "intuition" rather than empirical science. I encountered it constantly: the assumption that because a setting is 18-carat gold, the stone must be a sapphire rather than glass paste, or the misguided belief that you can determine carat weight simply by glancing at the size of a gem.

There is often a look of genuine shock when I explain that a diamond actually weighs less than a ruby of the same dimensions; because of their different densities, a ruby will always be "heavier" than a diamond of the same size. I didn't want to rely on these common misconceptions. I needed to know. I wanted my customers to have a level of confidence in me that was anchored in scientific fact and backed by the most prestigious gemmological organisation in the world.

The Science of the "Imposter"

I hadn't realised just how much I needed to understand. The FGA (Fellow of the Gemmological Association) curriculum is grueling. I spent hundreds of hours in lectures wrapping my head around the relationship between atomic structure and light waves. I studied the complex geology of different localities and how a mine’s "birthplace" affects a stone’s value.

Take the spinel, for example—a stone I have developed a deep professional love for. For centuries, it was the great "imposter." The most famous example is the Black Prince’s Ruby in the British Imperial State Crown. Weighing approximately 170 carats, this magnificent red stone was thought to be a ruby for hundreds of years, only for modern gemmology to reveal it is, in fact, a red spinel.

While the industry is only now truly starting to appreciate them, spinels are an underrated powerhouse. They come in almost every colour of the rainbow and possess fantastic attributes: high hardness (8 on the Mohs scale), excellent toughness, high lustre, and incredible stability. They are the "insider's" gemstone, and I can finally explain why they deserve a place in your collection.

The Rattle of the Letterbox

The sound of the mail slot snapped me back to the present. I didn’t think; I ran. My hands were shaking so violently I could barely peel the envelope open. I unfolded the paper and had to do a double-take.

"Congratulations, you have passed."

Not only had I passed, but I received an A in my Practical. For me, this is the ultimate validation. It confirms that in my day-to-day work—when a piece of jewellery is placed in my hands—I have the eyes, the training, and the scientific discipline to identify it correctly.
